Acrylic's extraordinary optical clarity is one of its greatest assets — and one of its most maintenance-dependent properties. In Dubai's environment, where fine dust from desert sandstorms, high humidity and intense UV exposure are daily realities, keeping acrylic displays, signage and furniture looking pristine requires the right approach. Here's the complete guide from our fabrication team.

The Most Common Acrylic Cleaning Mistake in Dubai

Wiping dry acrylic with a dry cloth.

This is the single most damaging thing you can do to an acrylic surface — and it's extremely common in Dubai's dusty environment, where staff often grab the nearest cloth to quickly wipe down a display stand before a customer arrives.

Acrylic's surface hardness (around 3 Mohs) is significantly lower than glass (5.5 Mohs). Fine dust particles — especially the silica-rich desert dust common in Dubai — act as an abrasive when dragged across a dry acrylic surface with a cloth. The result is a network of fine scratches that progressively dull the optical clarity of the material.

Golden Rule: Never wipe acrylic with a dry cloth. Always wet the surface first, then use a clean, damp microfibre cloth with gentle, straight (not circular) strokes.

The Correct Way to Clean Acrylic

Daily Cleaning

  1. Rinse or dampen the surface with clean water first to float off loose dust
  2. Apply a small amount of mild dish soap diluted in water to a clean microfibre cloth
  3. Wipe with gentle straight strokes — never circular motions
  4. Rinse with clean water
  5. Dry with a clean, damp microfibre cloth — never rub dry

What NOT to Use on Acrylic

These will permanently damage your acrylic surfaces:

  • Ammonia-based cleaners (Windex, many glass cleaners) — cause crazing and micro-cracking
  • Acetone or nail polish remover — dissolves acrylic completely
  • Bleach or chlorine-based products — cause discolouration and surface damage
  • Abrasive sponges or scouring pads — permanent scratches
  • Petroleum-based solvents — cause crazing and whitening
  • Dry paper towels or tissues — too abrasive for regular use

Safe Cleaning Products

  • Mild dish soap + water (most reliable daily cleaner)
  • Dedicated acrylic/plastic cleaners (Novus #1 Polish & Cleaner is excellent)
  • Isopropyl alcohol (70% solution, used sparingly) for disinfection
  • Baby shampoo diluted in water

Removing Scratches from Acrylic

Unlike glass, the lower hardness of acrylic is actually an advantage when it comes to scratch removal — because it can be polished out. The process depends on scratch depth:

Fine Surface Scratches (Most Common)

Use a plastic polish such as Novus #2 Fine Scratch Remover applied with a clean microfibre cloth in gentle circular motions. This micro-abrasive removes a tiny layer of material around the scratch, levelling the surface. Follow with Novus #1 Polish & Cleaner to restore optical clarity.

Deeper Scratches

  1. Wet-sand with 800 grit waterproof sandpaper, keeping the surface wet throughout
  2. Progress to 1000, 1500 then 2000 grit, always wet-sanding
  3. Polish with a plastic buffing compound on a soft cloth or low-speed polisher
  4. Finish with plastic polish to restore full clarity

Protecting Acrylic from Dubai's UV

Even UV-resistant cast acrylic benefits from additional protection in Dubai's extreme UV environment. An acrylic-compatible UV-protective coating or spray can be applied annually to window-facing or outdoor acrylic installations. Products such as 303 Aerospace Protectant provide both UV protection and an anti-static coating that repels dust — particularly useful for Dubai's sandstorm season.

Anti-Static Treatment

Acrylic builds up static electricity easily, which attracts dust — a particular problem in Dubai's dry, dusty air. Anti-static sprays applied after cleaning significantly reduce the rate at which dust accumulates on acrylic surfaces. In high-dust environments (open-air retail, exhibition halls), this can halve the cleaning frequency required.

When to Replace vs. Restore

Acrylic display stands and products can last 10–15 years with proper care. Signs it's time to replace rather than restore:

  • Deep crazing or cracking that extends through the material
  • Significant yellowing (indicates UV degradation — common in non-UV-grade acrylic)
  • Structural damage to bonded joints
  • Scratching so extensive that polishing would remove too much material

If you're unsure whether your acrylic display, stand or sign needs restoration or replacement, bring it to our Al Quoz 2 workshop for assessment. We can often restore displays that appear beyond help — and when replacement is genuinely needed, we'll produce an identical new version with faster turnaround.
