Walk into any acrylic supplier in Dubai and you'll be confronted with an overwhelming range of sheet types, grades and finishes. Cast or extruded? Clear or frosted? 3mm or 10mm? UV-resistant or standard? Making the wrong choice can mean a product that yellows in six months, edges that won't polish, or a surface that scratches in a busy retail environment. This guide explains every key acrylic sheet type available in the UAE — and exactly when to use each one.

Cast Acrylic vs Extruded Acrylic: The Critical Difference

Every acrylic sheet is manufactured by one of two methods: casting or extrusion. Understanding this difference is the single most important decision you'll make when selecting your material.

Cast Acrylic (GS / Cell Cast)

How it's made: Liquid MMA monomer is poured between two glass plates and slowly polymerised. This slow process produces a more uniform molecular structure.

Best for: Premium displays, trophies, awards, architectural applications, laser cutting and engraving. Cast acrylic produces bright white engraving marks and glass-like flame-polished edges.

Advantages:

  • Superior optical clarity (up to 93% light transmission)
  • Excellent laser cutting and engraving results
  • Better chemical resistance
  • Stiffer, more dimensionally stable
  • Available in a wider range of thicknesses (1mm to 50mm+)

At Acrylic Masters, we use cast acrylic for all premium fabrication — display stands, trophies, architectural components and any application where optical quality and finish matter. We always specify cast acrylic unless a project's budget requires otherwise.

Extruded Acrylic (XT)

How it's made: Melted PMMA is pushed through a die, producing sheets at high speed.

Best for: Protective covers, budget guards, general-purpose applications where optical perfection is not required. Extruded acrylic is cheaper but produces rougher laser-cut edges.

Advantages:

  • Lower cost per square metre
  • More consistent thickness tolerances
  • Better for thermoforming (heat-forming) applications

Acrylic Sheet Finishes Available in Dubai

Clear (Transparent) Acrylic

The most common grade — used for displays, signage, protective barriers, furniture and general fabrication. In cast grade, it achieves near-glass optical clarity. Available from 1mm to 25mm+ thickness.

Frosted / Satin Acrylic

One side or both sides feature a uniform micro-textured surface that diffuses light and provides privacy. Popular for partitions, bathroom panels, light diffusers and decorative interior elements. Also reduces fingerprint visibility — ideal for high-touch display applications.

Mirror Acrylic

A vacuum-metallised reflective coating on one surface creates a mirror effect. Available in silver, gold, rose gold, chrome and coloured mirror finishes. Half the weight of glass mirrors and shatterproof — perfect for retail displays, interiors and event décor.

Coloured Acrylic

Cast acrylic is available in 20+ standard colours — opaque, translucent and tinted transparent. Popular colours for Dubai's market include:

  • Opaque white and black — retail displays and signage
  • Translucent white — light diffusion panels and LED signs
  • Fluorescent colours — event signage and décor
  • UAE flag colours (red, green, white, black) — National Day and government applications

UV-Resistant Acrylic

Essential for any outdoor or sun-exposed application in Dubai. Standard clear acrylic yellows and degrades under intense UV exposure within 2–3 years. UV-stabilised cast acrylic (available with UV-resistant co-extrusion or UV absorbers) maintains clarity for 10+ years even in direct Gulf sunlight. Always specify UV-grade for window displays, outdoor signage and any application with sustained sun exposure.

Acrylic Sheet Thickness Guide

Choosing the right thickness is critical for structural integrity and aesthetic quality:

  • 1–2mm — Stencils, overlays, thin decorative elements, keychain blanks
  • 3mm — Standard signage, display panels, photo frames, light diffusers
  • 4–5mm — Display stand shelves, counter-top displays, menu holders
  • 6mm — Podium panels, retail fixtures, protective guards, furniture components
  • 8–10mm — Structural display stands, trophy bases, aquarium panels
  • 12–15mm — Thick trophy blocks, structural components, machine guards
  • 20–25mm — Premium trophy bases, architectural components, large aquariums

Which Acrylic Sheet Should You Choose?

The simple decision tree:

  1. Is it for a display, trophy, signage or anything premium? → Cast acrylic
  2. Will it be exposed to Dubai's sun? → UV-resistant cast acrylic
  3. Do you need laser cutting or engraving? → Cast acrylic only
  4. Is it a budget protective cover or guard? → Extruded acrylic
  5. Do you need a specific colour? → Cast coloured acrylic
