Acrylic vs Glass Display Stands: Which is Better for Your Dubai Business?

What is Acrylic?

Acrylic — also known as PMMA, Perspex, Plexiglass or simply "clear plastic" — is a lightweight, transparent thermoplastic that has been the material of choice for professional display stands for decades. It can be laser-cut, heat-formed, bonded, engraved and painted into virtually any shape imaginable.

Cast acrylic (the premium grade we use at Acrylic Masters) has optical clarity comparable to glass — up to 93% light transmission — while being just half the weight and significantly more impact-resistant.

1. Cost

Acrylic wins clearly. Custom acrylic display stands typically cost 40–60% less than equivalent glass displays of the same size and design. For retailers who need multiple units — a common requirement for Dubai's multi-branch retail chains — this saving is substantial. Glass also incurs higher shipping costs due to weight and fragile handling requirements.

2. Durability & Safety

Acrylic wins again. Acrylic is 17 times more impact-resistant than glass. In a busy retail environment — with stock replenishment, customer handling and cleaning — this matters. When glass breaks, it shatters into dangerous shards. Acrylic, if it does break under extreme force, fractures into larger, less dangerous pieces. For floor-level displays and children's areas in particular, acrylic is the clear safety choice.

3. UV Resistance & Dubai's Sunlight

This is where Dubai's specific environment matters. Standard glass yellows and UV-degrades when exposed to direct sunlight. Window displays in Dubai receive intense UV exposure — particularly in summer when shopfronts facing south or west can receive 8–10 hours of direct sun. Standard acrylic also yellows over time, but UV-stabilised cast acrylic — which we use at Acrylic Masters — maintains optical clarity for 10+ years even in direct Dubai sunlight.

4. Weight & Installation

Acrylic wins by a large margin. A 6mm acrylic sheet weighs roughly 7.2kg/m² versus 15kg/m² for equivalent glass. This makes acrylic displays significantly easier to install, reposition and ship — and reduces structural load on shelving and countertops.

5. Aesthetics & Optical Clarity

This is glass's strongest argument. Premium glass has a slightly cooler, denser visual quality that some luxury brands prefer — particularly for jewellery and watchmaking displays. However, for the vast majority of retail applications, high-grade cast acrylic is visually indistinguishable from glass to the end customer. The difference is primarily a perceived prestige preference.

Acrylic wins decisively. Acrylic can be laser-cut to any shape, engraved with logos, heat-bent into curves, bonded seamlessly, UV-printed with graphics and supplied in 20+ colours. Glass customisation is expensive, slow and limited in design complexity. For branded retail environments — where every display reflects your brand identity — acrylic's design flexibility is transformative.

7. Maintenance in Dubai

Dubai's dust storms and high humidity require frequent cleaning of display materials. Both materials clean easily, but acrylic is more susceptible to fine scratching from dry-dust wiping — always use a damp microfibre cloth on acrylic. Glass is more scratch-resistant but far heavier when displays need to be removed for deep cleaning.

• Static, permanent installations where the display will never be moved
• Applications requiring extreme scratch resistance in high-touch environments
